Hello to all the parents and friends of our new Year Five Class!
We hope you had a fantastic summer. The Year Five team is looking forward to working with you and your child this year.
This year, Ms. Michaud will be teaching the class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Mr. Weatherill will be teaching the class on Thursdays and Fridays. Additionally, we are fortunate to have extra assistance in the classroom from Miss Thornby, Miss Rodriguez and Miss Coombes.
Our home learning will be handed out on Monday and will be collected in on Friday. This will consist of spelling and times tables that need to be practiced every day. Occasionally, there may be additional practice of a skill in maths. This year, children will also have a learning log, which will be an ongoing task linked to a national event or curriculum focus point. Additionally, any incomplete work from the school day will be sent home to be finished.
Reading at Home
Your child is expected to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night. I cannot stress enough how important it is that your child is reading each night. Current research has shown that regular reading is directly linked with a child’s education success. This success has been proven to be further extended when adults such as parents or carers read with their children. So please, as much as possible, read with your child. Children’s journals will be checked once a week on a Thursday. Any child who does not have evidence in their reading log of regular reading at home will be expected to make up this time during the school day.
They can borrow books from their classroom as often as they like, but our allocated library time is on a Thursday. We now have a brand new computer system which will record which books are borrowed by your child. They will not be able to borrow new books from the library unless they are returned.
Physical Education (PE)
Our P.E. days are Tuesdays and Wednesday. Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit in school on these days. PE kit consists of shorts or tracksuit bottoms, trainers and a T-shirt, all labelled with your child’s name. Please ensure that your child’s PE kit is brought into school in a labelled bag.
Year 5 will be swimming in the Spring Term, further information about this will follow closer to the time.
Drinks and Fruit
Year 5 children are encouraged to bring a bottle of water to school with them. They will be allowed to drink in lesson time as well as at break time. The bottles should go home every evening to be refilled and returned to school the next day. They may also bring a piece of fruit which can be eaten at break time.
Absences and Punctuality
It is a government requirement that children attend school on a regular basis. This year, we would like all the children to be on time and attending. Children should be in the playground ready for the school day to start, by 8.50am, when we ring the bell.
We look forward to meeting you at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Thursday 13th September at 3.30
