This week’s MEND news - 4 March 2016
Hi St Stephen’s
This week in MEND in schools we are learning about the eatwell plate and the five different food groups.
Why do we need each food group?
- We need to eat fruits and vegetables so that we get all the minerals, vitamins and fibre we need to stay well and for our bodies to function properly.
- We need to eat starchy foods to give us the energy that we need to learn, play and grow.
- We need to eat and drink dairy foods in order to get calcium to keep our bones and teeth strong.
- We need to eat lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and seeds. These foods provide us with protein and iron to help us grow and for our brains to develop. Oily fish provides us with MEND-Friendly fats and vitamin D to work with the calcium from dairy foods to keep our bones and teeth nice and strong.
Remember what happens when the MEND Superdudes eat too much of the foods and drinks that are high in fat and/or sugar? That’s right they feel tired and sluggish and didn’t have enough energy to do the weekly challenges with their friends!
Whole school weekly challenge:
Physical activity – Organise a play date with your mates!
SUPERDUDE TIP – Make it as active as possible – tell us what you did next week!
Nutrition challenge – Make the monthly recipe from the Healthy Noticeboard this week!
SUPERDUDE TIP – How many of the different food groups are used in the recipe? Let us know how it tasted next week!
We will be holding a family workshop for year 1 and year 4 parents, carers and children to attend on Wednesday 16 March from 8.45-9.30am in the school hall. Pop it in your diary and we will let you know the topic next week!
Let us know how you get on! If you need any support in succeeding in your weekly challenge, we are happy to help!
